All Out War: Chapter 1

“You can’t have a war without……casualties.”

W: Robert Kirkman A: Charlie Adlard C: Cliff Rathburn

The war against Negan has finally come! Jesus has told Rick that he truly believes he can lead the group to victory. Will that be the case or will Negan put a stop to the uprising against his reign of terror!?

The Ups: The tension that Kirkman has built up till now for the upcoming war with Negan has definitely kept me on edge. This was the same feeling I had when Rick’s group battled the Governor but with so much more at stake and the fact that both sides are equally prepared to destroy the other for complete control. Adlard and Rathburn have definitely cleaned up on the artwork, scenes look a lot less grimy and much more detailed. This is hopefully a sign for future issues to have wonderful story telling on top of great detailed black and white art.

The Downs: I know it was just the first issue but it was a very slow start, not a single death not even a zombie kill. I know that Kirkman promised a whole lot of deaths in this story arc but I was hoping for a much bigger bang then the small tiny twist we got at the end. For me there was far too much set up and I felt there was already enough set up leading to this arc. Scenes of the group preparing the supplies and the small conversation could of been sped up a little more so a little more could of happened. But then again unlike Kirkman’s previous major story arcs this one is going to be 12 chapters long and the issues are coming out bi weekly so a lot more story can be told but I’m just hoping this slow issue doesn’t reflect the rest of the story.

Overall: A slow but solid issue, I’m concerned if a big story will effect the overall telling of the story but it definitely looks promising. This is a quick read.
