NOSTALGIA

This special DC Comics one shot lets us get some deeper insight into the mind and the world of our favorite reporter, Lois Lane, and see how she handles things when the Man of Steel is not by her side.

The Ups: The best about this comic was the narration of Lois Lane throughout the entirety of the book. Writer Marguerite Bennett tells the story from a flashback perspective of Lois as a child and her present day life. Bennett tells the story in a way that the theme of family and promises is constantly being presented to us throughout the book and the present day problem is perfectly synched with Lois’s flashbacks to her childhood. It was also nice to see Lois get some serious face time all to herself without Superman constantly being a factor. It is always refreshing to read every once and a while a story that is about the ordinary people that help make up the world of the extraordinary people. Lois’s investigative and inquisitive nature always made her a strong character and, in some ways, a force to be reckoned with and now that she has her time to shine it’s very exciting to see. The artwork done in this issue does a good job of being bright and colorful in moments of happiness or joy but, when it comes time for deep or profound moments, it does not immediately shift to dark, the artists are great at making subtle changes to the panels in order to properly convey the tone of the scene.

Superman - Lois Lane #1 - Page 5The Downs: The only issue I see with this comic is I can’t really figure out why it was made in the first place. Sure, one shots are always good but they often are meant to be a method of things to come and, from what I can tell, it is very unlikely that Lois will be getting her own series in the near future.

Overall: Although the fact that this one shot was conceived does slightly confuse me it was definitely a joy to behold and should be read by anyone who is a fan of Superman, Lois Lane, or just comics in general.
