Moon Knight #2 Review

Moon Knight (2014-) 002-000Writer: Warren Ellis

Artist: Declan Shalvey

Colorist: Jordie Bellaire

SNIPER

Moon Knight, clad in a brand new suit, heads out to takedown a gunman who has a strong grudge against nine people who want nothing more than to live out their normal lives…but there is nothing normal when it comes to Moon Knight.

The Ups: The thing I found most interesting about each issue of Moon Knight is that they are so weirdly unique that it almost seems that it’s written by different people. Warren Ellis method of storytelling is a bit unorthodox compared to others in the industry but it gives more life to the concept of Moon Knight. He is a crime fighter who suffers from multiple personality disorder brought on by his resurrection from the hands of Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god. That, in itself, is weird to say but it still works. The direction the second issue takes is very similar to the first and it almost feels like watching the first few episodes of a new television show: The plot isn’t quite there, characters and their demeanor are still being flushed out, and there is no indefinite story yet. But despite the lack of an actual story arc being told, this issue still has a strong continuity to it this issue is just as obscure as the first. The artwork done by Declan Shalvey is simple enough that it doesn’t overwhelm but just detail enough to be able to understand the whole picture. Bellaire’s colors help to enhance the artwork with strong contrasts of light and dark that bring the scenery and people to life. I, personally, also enjoyed the costume change made for Moon Knight. I enjoyed the white suit from the first issue but the one debuted in this issue I find to be better. I can’t say whether or not this costume is permanent now or if they will continue to change his outfit but either way it’ll be great.

The Downs: Nothing! Everything in this issue was awesome!

Overall: Ellis, Shalvey, and Bellaire are doing a terrific job with this new Moon Knight series and I know I am not the only one who is excited to see more from these three. At the end if each issue however I’m left wondering if the next one will be the start of an actual consistent story arc because I’m curious to see their take on it with this new Moon Knight. For the time being though, I am content with that they’ve given us so far and can’t wait for more!

  1. Loved this issue as well. A true work of art and very unique in its execution, especially the opening. I hope they do keep changing his costume up. I think it works really well.
