TOMORROW NEVER LEARNS

Wolverine and Storm begin to adjust to life as the headmaster and headmistress of the Jean Grey School. Meanwhile, Quentin Quire, now condemned to his future, lives his days in confusion and insecurity.

The Ups: The best part about this book is that writer Jason Latour does an awesome job of making the Jean Grey school still feel like a school full of teenagers despite them all being mutants. In this first issue we see there is fighting, relationships, and lonely new kids, all of which are things we are accustomed to seeing in any other school setting, It is just a bonus that the school is full of mutants! The artwork in the book is astounding and Mahmud Asrar does a great job of giving each character subtle distinctions in their faces so no two characters can ever be confused with one another. Lastly, I love the new direction they are going in with Wolverine’s character, without his powers he feels like a much more relatable character given the fact that he now is faced with the inevitability of death as well as people who depend on him. It will be very interesting to see where Wolverine and this series will be heading.

Wolverine and the X-Men #1 - Page 4The Downs: The story itself isn’t really made clear in the issue and the first few pages offers a little more confusion than i think the Latour was hoping for. Also, speaking of the story, I found that the atmosphere within the school was much more appealing than anything going on anywhere else in the book and they seem to be planning on steering away from that perspective which seems like a bad idea. In addition, Israel Silva’s colors were nice to look at and did compliment the art very well but all in all they were nothing special.

Overall: The narration in the beginning of the book slightly gives away where the series will be heading and who will be heading there but as they say it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey and my only hope is that the journey is a good one. Wolverine’s new mannerisms mixed with his old make him somewhat of a role model so it will definitely be exciting to see what he is now willing to do or not willing to do if the journey calls for it.
