Magneto #1 Review

Magneto #1 - Page 1Writer: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Colorist: Jordie Bellaire

Erik Lehnsherr has been known by many names and has taken many different roles but no matter what Magneto has always committed his actions, no matter how extreme, to the future of all mutant kind. Now that Magneto has finally separated himself from Cyclops, the man that ruined his mutant powers, Magneto once again goes on his one man journey to make humans pay for their crimes against mutantkind.

The Ups: With all the solo issues coming out these days with a lot of great art and powerful writing, and Magneto just brings itself up on that list. Bunn delivers us a story of a once power man broken and full of demons on a mission to end those who have done wrong to mutants. Now you may say “ok this have been done tons of times before,” but what makes this story stand out is we see a new kind of Magneto, a less powerful, not as crazy but just as driven to make sure his justice is served. Best of all I found myself caring about Magneto, not too long ago he was with the X-Men with all the technology in his grasp and he gave it up because of his beliefs. This for me was great considering how much Magento has changed in the past few years this series is a place to rebuild his personality and help bring a more diverse character than just the powerful villain he’s most known to be and Bunn is doing a terrific job at just that. Walta’s unique art style fits perfectly with the gritty and rough feel the story has and Bellaire compliments nicely with the basic tone colors, keeping it simple but very effective.

Magneto #1 - Page 17The Downs: Not really a bad thing just something that stuck out to me about the way Magneto’s face was drawn. Being a New Yorker, Magneto looked like an old Italian man who loved going to the gym, now by all means I’m not saying it’s bad but its something that I couldn’t get out of my head.

Overall: Another wonderful start to another solo series done right. This creative team seems to be headed in a good direction with the story and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
