THE QUEST FOR A CHEF

The start of a new arc and a perfect jumping on point. Red Sonja has recovered from the plague and the battle with her warrior sister. She starts a new adventures that sets her on the path of a collector. Her first objective: Collecting a Chef but will a tribe of cannibals willing to depart with their chef? Spoiler: No they aren’t

The Ups: This is one wacky issue that merits to be a Simone issue. Red Sonja was sent on a mission from a pharaoh to collect a few people with a set of skills. Her first person of interest is a chef. Her thoughts during her search was that she was horny, hungry, and cold (we all been there at some point). It was hysterical inner dialogue. At one point she was contemplating a three-some if it helped her solve her problems. Lots of funny moments in this issue and Simone nails it. I was laughing through out. Simone does a great job establishing the strong presence that comes with Red Sonja. There is a panel where Sonja, just paraphrase, ‘Do you know who I am because if you knew you wouldn’t be attacking me’ it was powerful and displays Sonja as the legend she is known for. The art from Geovani and Lucas was very detailed and realistic. I felt like I can really hear Sonja’s fire crackle in the swamp. The art team takes this book to another level. Frison’s and Reeder’s covers are beautiful and my favorites this week.

The Downs: It took a while for this issue to be put out but since this was a start for a new arc it was not that bad of a thing

Overall: A funny issue all around. Simone is revitalizing the character and taking the series to a top book to read list. Simone establishes Sonja as the legend and feared character of this age without losing a beat in her humorous style. The art continues to set up the story perfectly. Highly detailed art makes you feel like you can not only see what is happening but hear and feel the panels. This series continues to rise for Dynamite and she be a great read for old and new readers.
