ZERO YEAR: DARK CITY Part 2

Still trying to put the pieces of events together from the last issue , Bruce is confronted by Dr. Death and Lucius Fox! Bruce does not know what is going on but he is going to find out. Gordon and Bruce have a show down with the past. Can Bruce bring the truth to light? or Will he be crushed by Death’s hands?!

The Ups: Snyder just keeps bring on the hurt to Batman. It is hard to watch but perfectly makes sense. Keep in mind that this story is about a young amateur Batman and all the beating he is taking is what leads him to become the Dark Knight of today. Snyder crafts an intricate story that sheds more light on the relationship of Bruce and Jim Gordon. Bruce hatred for Gordon was explored through a story of the past that will change your view on the characters. The Doctor Death story takes a backseat because of the Gordon story but there is a clever face off between Bruce and Doctor Death that ends in a jokingly matter that had me chuckle for a bit. Capullo brings his chilling art work we love from Spawn in this issue but on another level. His rendition of Doctor Death is griming and will make you want to look away. His lines are much cleaner this issue and that is amazing after pulling oversize issues back to back. Another colorist takes the spotlight this week. Fco brings in a new light to Gotham. His colors in the lab pages were outstanding. He uses a combination of purple, red, & orange that sends you on a color trip. I really loved the subtleness of the red sky that was really cool. The amazing cover is just a great indication of whats in store.

The Downs: It pains me to say that this creative team is perfect this issue….oh wait it doesn’t pain me.

Overall: This is a year 1 story that is jaw dropping and gripping. Another amazing issue by the Bat team. Synder gives us answers to some questions and more insight on Bruce’s past while setting up more mysteries to explore. Capullo is showing his fans how much he appreciate us with his art being 110% every time but he is bested by Fco this issue. This book sells itself but if you ask me, This series has been on top of the charts week after week. This issue is no different and it is a must buy!
