Zero Year Dark City: Part One

“…Riddle me this Gotham.”

W: Scott Synder A: Greg Capullo C: Fco Plascencia

After the two months wait, Batman is back and bringing a full assault on the Red Hood gang. Is Bruce ready to attempt the greatest challenge of his life and is the world ready for the coming of the Batman?!

The Ups: This issue was 56 pages of nonstop Batman awesomeness. First off, I loved the small nod Capullo made to the original Batman animated series. As I grew up watching the show that brought me into the world of Batman, I enjoy reading and seeing the references to it. If you pay close attention you’ll catch other Batman references of the past (Free hint: check out the gloves). It is awesome seeing an artist giving a great series the respect it deserves. Speaking of the art, Capullo has been drawing the best looking Batman world since issue one. The detail on every character and background is on point, even giving Bruce Wayne a new hair style worked out really well. Plascencia colors gave a retro feel that further brought me back to the original animated cartoon. It was so well done, this issue could of been an episode of the show and fit in perfectly! I have always enjoyed how Synder writes Bruce, and does a great job making him also look like a rookie struggling to save his city far from the master hero he eventually becomes. In this issue Synder also gives Bruce an interesting cocky edge that actually comes off pretty hilarious, it almost seemed like he was acting like Nightwing would while he’s fighting, cracking jokes and making the bad guys look like fools. Overall the story is great in the way it shows how the world reacts to the first appearance of Batman and Bruce Wayne’s public return. The end of the issue was exciting. This issue truly had it all.

The Downs: 56 pages of Batman goodness, nothing wrong with that.

The Overall: What a great issue to bring me back from my Batman drought of Villains’ Month. Synder, Capullo, Miki and Plascencia truly delivered on every level. So do yourself a favor when you’re done reading this, get off the chair, go to your local comic book store and pick this one up.
