THE SECRET ORIGIN OF TONY STARK: THE BEST OFFENSE Part 3

W: Kieron Gillen A: Carlo Pagulayan C: Scott Hanna

TONY AGAINST THE GODKILLER! WILL HE ACCEPT HIS DESTINY?

Everyone’s favorite armored hero is back in the continuation of the Secret Origin storyline. Tony is trying to stop the Godkiller from destroying another planet in Earth but P.E.P.P.E.R. is in between him and saving the world from his “destiny”

The Ups: The artwork and coloring was very well done in this issue. Pagulayan puts some great detail into the Iron Man armors and Hanna gives rich texture to make all the armors shine and pop in all their glory. There was also a nice action scene that looked like it was taken right out of the recent live action movie which I enjoyed (the scene not the movie.)

The Downs: This issue, more than anything, felt like a filler to close up some of the gaps in this story. There was a lot of talking and very little action, which in some cases is not a bad thing but here it didn’t really hold me enough to keep me interested in what was going on. The pace was very slow and I couldn’t connect with emotion that Gillen was trying to display. Even the sense of urgency of the approaching Godkiller didn’t come off strong enough to where you felt Tony was really in grave danger.

Overall: Unless you’re really invested in this arc then this issue is good enough to read at the store and move along. The action comes to a painful halt with all the dialogue. Looks like the pending world threat situation is something that Tony can put on hold to have some good old conversation.
