UNCANNY X-MEN.INH

We explore how the aftermath of “Infinity” affects the X-men when girls-night-out doesn’t go as planned and the X-men run into a new inhuman.

The Ups: The issue has a lot of nice moments that focus on the X-men in their downtime, specifically the Stepford Cuckoos, Jean Grey of the past, and Emma Frost. Brian Michael Bendis does a good job of showcasing who these X-women are in their downtime and how they interact with one another. The rivalry and tension between Jean Grey and the Stepford Cuckoos was particularly interesting to see. In an issue centered mostly on women it’s refreshing to see Kris Anka’s more realistic take on the artwork. In superhero comics it’s very easy to just draw every female character with a perfect body but Anka chose to draw the characters with normal body types and detailed faces to show their expressions more clearly. In an issue dedicated to female characters it’s important to showcase their characters and not who are visually and Anka’s art does an amazing job at this.

The Downs: In terms of heavy plot nothing really happens until the end and there’s no clear indication of where the story is heading, only that the X-men are facing a new problem. The issue is also a little heavy on the dialogue, but for an issue that is largely dedicated to showing the X-men in their downtime this is to be expected.

Overall: The character-building part of the issue was well done and was fairly entertaining. The second part of the issue where the plot actually advances was good but didn’t really give the reader a solid indication of events to come. The conflict between mutants and inhumans has potential for a good story and could turn into something really compelling and interesting but right now it’s too soon to tell.
