Hi guys Superiorchris here again! First I want to state that these stories are my personal recommendations. If you are getting ready to head out to watch the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and want to know more about them, here are some stories that will help. The Guardians are not well known but as a long time reader I can assure you that you are in for some great characters. He our some stories that I believe shows who are the Guardians and their world. Don’t forget to catch Guardians of the Galaxy out this Friday!
Synopsis: Back-to-back Annihilation wars have weakened the boundaries of our universe. Dark gods and monsters are seeping through the cracks, reigning horror upon many worlds. In the face of terror, who stands to defend a desperate universe? Star-Lord and his squad of butt-kickers – the modern day Guardians of the Galaxy! (credit: Amazon)
Why read it: This book is the best introduction to some of the modern members of the Guardians of the Galaxy with some new faces. You have Peter Quill put together a team selfish and out of control heroes that will make you question the heroism. The team ends up causing more trouble than preventing but there is a lot of fun to be had in this series. If you enjoy Bendis’ New Avengers interview style story telling then this series won’t disappoint. I promise you’ll end up liking some of the new faces such as I did with Adam Warlock. There is a complete vol 1 edition out in early August if you don’t mind waiting.
Synopsis: Thrill to the exploits of the greatest heroes of the 31st century, the original Guardians of the Galaxy! Join telekinetic Vance Astro, alien archer Yondu, flame-haired Mercurian Nikki, superstrong Jovian Charlie-27, crystalline Plutonian Martinex, the mysterious Starhawk and his wife Aleta as they undertake a quest to find the long-lost shield of Captain America – a mission that pits them against Iron Man’s twisted legacy, the marauding alien cyborgs called the Stark, as well as the intergalactic thieves known as Force! Plus, the Guardians confront the devil’s daughter, Malevolence – and battle across time alongside the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange and the 26th century’s Thor, Dargo Ktor, against the mad god known as Korvac! Why read it: If you truly want to get to know the original Guardians then you’ll have to look into the year 3000. Jim Valentino created a group of heroes that came after the Avengers and the Fantastic Four but they still hold the same principle of justice with a hint of jolliness. You won’t find Peter Quill here but you will find Yondu (portrayed by Walking Dead Michael Rooker in the movie).
Synopsis: It’s the Avengers, the New Warriors, the X-Men and more against the omnipotent Eternal, Thanos! The Mad Titan has become the most powerful being in the universe, and enslavement or destruction may be the only choices he gives it! The successive Starlin sagas that shook space and time start here! (credit: Amazon)
Why read it: Why not some love for the villain? The story is essential to connecting the dots of the Marvel cinematic universe and where the gems are going. Thanos is a big threat to the Guardians and the universe. You get to see the extend of his villainy in this series. Thanos motives are a bit complex but once you know them, you’ll like him more.
2. War of Kings
Synopsis: The Inhumans have taken flight to outer space. Their destiny as rulers written in the ancient fates, Black Bolt and the royal family have taken command of the Kree empire! Meanwhile, Vulcan, power-mad brother of the X-Men’s Cyclops and Havok, has become the newest emperor of the Shi’ar, the most advanced military civilization in the galaxy! What happens when these mighty powers turn their rage upon one another? And what happens to those caught in the crossfire? (credit: Amazon)
Why read it: This is one of my favorite Guardians related event. You get to see how big of a task it is to be part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Dealing with the politics of space wars and the difference of two parties with the Guardians and the universe caught in the middle. There is lots of action and death. There is also getting to know other great Marvel characters in this series such as The Inhumans and Ronan the Accuser. Lets just say that the Guardians aren’t the best negotiators and that’s what makes this book worth reading.
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Steve McNiven, Sara Pichelli
Synopsis: There’s a new rule in the galaxy: No one touches Earth! No one! But why has Earth suddenly become the most important planet in the galaxy? That’s what the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to find out! Join Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and – wait for it – the invincible Iron Man, as they embark upon one of the most explosive and eye-opening chapters of Marvel NOW! These galactic Avengers are going to discover secrets that will rattle Marvel readers for years to come! But while London deals with a brutal invasion by the Badoon, the fate of the Guardians may have already been decided millions of miles away! Why wait for the movie? It all starts here! (credit: Amazon)
Why read it: If you are going to see the movie then this is the book for you. This is exactly or close to what the characters will be like on the big screen. They are a rag tag team of A-holes that save the world with lots of explosions. The character development and interactions is the book’s big selling point. Iron Man is also in this series if you need a familiar face to guide you into new territory. If you enjoy the movie then you’ll love what Bendis is doing. If you need anymore reasons Sara Pichelli is on art….SOLD!
These are my 5 recommended stories but there are many more stories that should be read beyond these. Some honorable mentions go to Annihilation and The Thanos Imperative. Both great stories involving the Guardians as well. Tell us what is your favorite Guardians story below in the comments. Make sure to catch Guardians of the Galaxy this Friday!
