Rumors of the show being cancelled stirred unrest and disappointment among fans of the show. To dispel these rumors Bryan Konietzko (who co-created “Avatar: The Last Airbender” as well as “The Legend of Korra”) released the image above which clarified that “The Legend of Korra” would not be cancelled and that more information would be made available at SDCC. After this Friday’s episode “The Terror Within” airs the show will strictly be released online. Fans will be able to watch episodes as they come out via Nick.com and through the Nick app. “The Legend of Korra” Tumblr stated: “Thousands of you have been asking to watch this incredible show online, so hopefully this news works in your favor.” While the fans did vocalize a desire to watch episodes online, there were no requests to take the show off the air.
Many believe that “The Legend of Korra” is being taken off the air in favor of programming which achieved more ratings. The first few episodes of the show saw low ratings, but this is largely due to the lack of promotion and advertising on the side of Nickelodeon. Trailers for Season 3 were released only a week before the start of the season which caused many viewers to miss the live TV showing. These episodes also weren’t uploaded to the Nick website so any fans who saw the episodes online did not count towards their ratings and as a result Nickelodeon thinks less people are watching the show than there really are.
“The Legend of Korra” is still under contract to finish its third season and produce a fourth, which means the show cannot be cancelled simply due to low ratings. The way the show is distributed is still decided by Nickelodeon and they have control over what airs and when. More information will be released at SDCC and hopefully everyone will still be able to enjoy the rest of the season.
