The latest “Entertainment Weekly” cover gives us a preview of what we can expect to see in Marvel Studios “Avengers 2: Age of Ultron”. The cover itself shows Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in his newest Iron Man suit which looks like a more substantial evolution of his modular armor from “Iron Man 3”. Beside him is Chris Evans as Captain America in his new uniform. Cap’s new uniform takes the modern look of his S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform from “Captain America 2” and adds the classic colors and patterns from his WWII costume. Between them is the main villain of the movie, an Ultron with menacing red lights and eyes, who is likely Ultron Prime. Behind the Ultron in the foreground there are a handful of similar looking robots which have blue lighting. This would indicate that in the movie there is one master Ultron, the original, who builds and commands several subordinate Ultrons. Kevin Feige has stated that Ultron is “more than a voice roll”. Feige intends to use motion capture technology to use James Spader’s “face and his body to create a whole performance.”
When asked about how he will portray Ultron in this film, Joss Whedon said this:
“He’s got pain, and the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.”
Feige expanded on Whedon’s vision for the character:
“Ultron in the comics is a robot, but what’s cool about him in the comics — and certainly how Joss Whedon is interpreting him for the movie — is that he is much more than just a robot. That he’s infused with much character. And I don’t want to say too much, but you can imagine James Spader will be very dynamic in his portrayal of the character.”
Expect to hear much more news about “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and many other Marvel Studios projects at San Diego Comic-Con.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” comes out May 1, 2015.
