Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Kev Walker
Colorist: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
The surviving teens of Avengers Arena are all trying to cope with what they’ve seen and done. Some have it easier than others, and none of them will ever be the same.
The Ups: This is a great first issue, both as a new entry in a new series and as a recap of the events of Avengers Arena. While I still highly recommend reading Avengers Arena you could probably read this, having not read it, and immediately learn who each character is and what makes them tick. Each character deals with the aftermath of Arena in their own way, and that creates a good amount of tension within the team. The art team of Kev Walker and Jean-Francois Beaulieu is back and their art is just as good as their art was in Arena at their peak.
The Downs: This issue is essentially a recap of Arena and an update on each of the characters, which leaves little room to introduce any conflict. While the ending does give the series a definitive direction the majority of the issue is devoted to re-introducing the characters.
Overall: This issue may not have had the shock value of an issue of Avengers Arena, but it was nice to see all of the surviving members back again, and to see how the events of Arena changed them. The writing and art are fantastic and consistent with the previous series which makes everything flow quite well from that series into this one. This issue does some great set-up and I feel like all the characters have the potential to be the subjects of amazing stories. This series seems like it has a lot of potential, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
