THE TRIAL OF JEAN GREY: PART 1
The Guardians of the Galaxy and All-New X-men cross-over begins in this issue. Just as the team is recovering from their last battle they are attacked by some familiar cosmic entities.
The Ups: Stuart Immonen and Marte Gracia deliver some amazing action sequences in this issue. As always the art has a great sense of intensity and power to it. Everything looks as though it channels one pure distilled emotion at a time. The fight scenes channel pure ferocity and movement and even the art in the more dialogue heavy scenes is full of raw emotion. Bendis’ writing has been consistently good in this series and this issue is no different. With characters that have such complicated (some might say convoluted) histories Bendis does a great job of keeping track of what each character should be feeling and how they all should play off of one another. The relationships in this team feel dynamic and justified and there are one or two great moments in this issue that really showcase that.
The Downs: My only real complaint with this issue is that “.NOW” is not a real decimal; therefore “22.NOW” is not a real number. Aside from that math faux pas I may have wanted to see some other characters have more page-time in this issue but over the course of the arc I’m sure those characters will get their time to shine.
Overall: All in all this was an exciting first issue in this arc. The art alone sells this issue but there’s some good interaction between the team as well. The issue does go by kind of fast just because it’s mostly action, but if you’re left wanting more that means they were doing something right. The plot doesn’t advance terribly far in this issue but it does give some strong set-up to the arc. To keep up with “The Trial of Jean Grey” remember it continues in “Guardians of the Galaxy 11.NOW”
